The best off-piste mountain in the Alps
Engelberg has often been called this. The huge snow falls, the easy accessible off-piste skiing and the still small lift queues give you the right conditions to have a really unique experience on the mountain. The skiing is on two sides of the valley, one sunny side with gentle slopes and one north facing with more challenging. With the small village and big mountain, you rarely find crowded pistes. From our central location by the train station it’s about 400m meters to the lifts or 40 meters to the free skibus.
The ski area is a good mix for all levels of skiers, so you find everything from the easy beginner slopes to leg-killing black moguls or smooth red cruiser pistes. Skiing from an altitude of 3000 metres, and with a vertical drop of over 2000 metres, the north side Titlis is candy for all powder lovers and advanced skiers. The lift system is built like a giant Y, and there are large areas of easy accessible off-piste both ‘within’ and ‘outside’ the Y. Among our favourites is classical Laub, 1200 vertical metres, wide as 10 football fields and perfect. If the avalanche risk is not too big, you can venture out on Galtiberg, one of the most famous and dramatic ski runs in the whole Alps. You ski over glaciers, along a 500 meter high cliff and end up at a bus stop at the very end of the valley.
On the south side you have the Brunni ski system which is more family oriented and not as big as Titlis. The Brunni side also offers good tree skiing (excellent for bad weather days) and the several long runs which end further down the valley with trains back to Engelberg.
In addition to the ski systems the valley offers infinite opportunities for ski touring and hiking. We are more than happy to give you advice on where and how.
