Snow on the Radar – Snow Report Fri 25th Jan

Another refill of snow is coming to Engelberg

Sun, sun, sun and sun. We couldn’t believe it and neither did the weather reports. The little refill we were supposed to get last week dodged the Engelberg valley and left us dry. Temperatures have been low during the week despite a strong sun, which made the powder stay soft and fluffy, even if it was mostly tracked. Still fun and harmless.

From tomorrow, Saturday, on it is going to be a cloudy with partly snow filled skies (someone heard our prayers!)

The crust we anticipated due to the strong sunshine didn’t dare to show its face during this long and dry period – good for us and the snow in the end. Only the most exposed faces were a bit crusty. But absolutely nothing to be ashamed about. In the meantime, we had a wedding in the house and a pretty wild after ski…

Snow depth Village (1.050m): 35 cm
Snow condition: Powder, partially wind affected
Latest snowfall: 17.01.19

Avalanche Bulletin:

As a consequence of a strong northerly wind, wind slabs will form. These can be released very easily, but they will be small in most cases. The number and size of avalanche prone locations will increase with altitude. Backcountry touring and other off-piste activities call for careful route selection. The wind slabs are to be bypassed in steep terrain.

Gliding avalanches

In particular, on very steep sunny slopes individual gliding avalanches are possible below approximately 2400 m. Caution is to be exercised in areas with glide cracks.
