Snow Report Engelberg 15th of February 2022

Sun and powder in engelberg.

A good week in the rear with a small refill of 30cm fresh powder on Friday last, and more to come this week. Our hope now is that the Engelberg forecast stays cold and that it doesn’t get too warm. At the moment it’s a lot of snow in the air and we hope it stays like that, see forecast below.

One thing we really love to acknowledge is the Engelberg Olympic Medals! A Bronze for Michelle Gisin and a Gold to Marco Odermatt, there must be something in the water, What a week.

Other friends in the house were ski legend Chad Sayers and Marcus Caston. Chad just finished his book Overexposure (read this beautiful article about the book on Backcountry Magazine) this autumn and is taking the time to ski with friends and meet up with ski Photographer Oskar Enander, our local ski photo wizard. Marcus is planning to stay for a bit longer and is at this time in our neighbouring hotel Bellevue, skiing with a group before getting back to us to meet up with Johan Jonsson, Connery Lundin and Frank Shine from the Blizzard team. They, as much as us, will be praying for good conditions!

Snow Report Engelberg 15th of February 2022

Snowpack

Fresh snow and wind from westerly directions have given rise to fresh snow drift accumulations that are prone to triggering in some cases. These are large in the western regions exposed to heavier precipitation and in southern Grisons, otherwise small to medium-sized.
In addition, weak layers exist deep in the snowpack. In the western part of the northern flank of the Alps and from southern Valais through northern Ticino to Grisons, a succession of avalanches have been released in these weak layers by people in recent days. The avalanche prone locations are to be found, in particular, on little-used west, north and east-facing slopes. In the central and eastern parts of the northern flank of the Alps, there have been very few releases in deeper weak layers. More info.
