Ski Lodge Engelberg is an international gathering place in the heart of the Alps, bringing mountain-loving humans from all over the world together. Our guests come for extraordinary adventures, exquisite food and drinks, and a cozy bed to recharge. Enter into our bar on any given evening, and you’ll certainly find an interesting conversation. We’d like to introduce you to some of the people who visit us here at Ski Lodge in a series we’re calling On Our Doorstep. We hope you enjoy getting to know these friends of ours as much as we have, and that you join our community soon!
1. When and why did you start skiing?
My parents were and still are, avid skiers, so they had me up at Treble Cone as a baby, tearing up the slopes in the backpack. Apparently there were a few solid crashes, which explains a lot! I began learning to ski under my own power from 2 years old.
2. What is the most distinctly joyful memory you have from skiing?
From my experience skiing the wild and unpopulated mountains of the Southern Alps, something I miss is that feeling of solitude and peace. It’s so special to feel that you’re all alone with your friends, no one else is in sight, and you might be a few days’ travel from the nearest civilization.
The only time I’ve really experienced that here in Switzerland was the week after COVID lockdown in May ‘20. As soon as the ban lifted, I took the chance to ski the Patrouille des Glaciers route with an awesome crew from Faction Skis. We were all alone at Schönbielhutte (the warden had kindly given us a key), we saw one person between Zermatt and Arolla. As we posted up at Cabane de Dix to scope and ski a few lines, people slowly started to turn up. But those lonely moments of feeling like you’re out in the wild with your team, are just incredible. That’s when I feel the deepest connection to nature and the people around me.

3. Where in the alps would you ski what? Piste, Freeride or cross-country?
My favourite piste run is Triple Treat at Treble Cone (if the Southern Alps of New Zealand count). This is jam-packed full of side hits and because I’m not so keen on piste skiing, this is a great run to inject some fun into your lefts and rights.
For freeriding, I can’t look past my home in Val de Bagnes. Yes, the resort-accessed skiing of Verbier is unmatched, but the freeride possibilities if you throw a pair of skins in your bag are immense. There are countless options if you ski tour out of Verbier’s resort, but it’s also pretty competitive. If you want to avoid the powder stress, look further up the valley – some of my favourite lines towards the Barrage de Mauvoisin are Mont Rogneux, Grande Tave and the Corbassière couloirs, and there’s so much more hidden away there.
I might be saving cross country for my old age – please send me some tips in 30 years.
