We have all seen the discouraging pictures from the Alps these past few weeks.
In Kitzbühel the frozen water from the snow canons is magically stitched together in a patchwork that leaves you wondering if the design is original Pollock. Arosa is greener than the neighbors’ new lawn and in Hochfügen you can still tee out and get value on your yearly membership at the golf club (that costs more than your car). We think that skiing is fun no matter the conditions but understand everyone who is not particulary motivated to jump over rocks and grass. If you would like to maximize your ski days and break last year’s record, you will have to get to our level. Literally, you need to be at a higher altitude.
In Engelberg, aswell as in St Moritz, we are lucky enough to have a ski system above 1800 m.a.s.l so we consider us blessed during pre-seasons like this.
The slopes are in really good condition and without snowy clouds hanging around we can enjoy a coffee or lunch in the warmth of the sun. We all know the importance of good pre-season training and currently really get value for our money. Long runs from the glacier down to Trübsee make our legs burn – and we thought we were on top of it in the gym during fall… But there are no shortcuts to becoming good at something. The 60 km open slopes, and counting, are really giving us all we need and are the perfect start for the season.
Another good thing is that Brunni, the area on the sunny side opposite of Titlis, is not yet covered in snow and therefore perfect for long hikes or walks. This is a great activity provided that your legs still carry you after a day on the slopes. If you would like to take your kid for a first skiing adventure they just opened Klostermatte, the kid-friendly zone down in the village.
So no matter what people say: we are all good here in Engelberg.
