We often get asked for hiking recommendations, and for those looking for a moderately challenging hike with a nice bit of vert, this is a great one! It encompasses all of the quintessential Swiss hiking characteristics that we know and love: farm animals, forests, big mountain views, streams, and waterfalls.
The Approach
Start your journey at Ski Lodge Engelberg, walking through the village towards the Sporting Park. Cross the Bänklialp bridge over the Engelberger Aa river and follow the path to the left that heads up the valley. After just under 4 km, you’ll take the trail to the right (you will see the sign for Hohfad) and begin to climb steeply through a shaded forest.
The Climb
After a challenging ascent of 1.3 km with 352 m, the forest opens to a high plateau with stunning views of Engelberg and the surrounding mountains. This spot is perfect for a picnic or to refill your water, with the impressive Titlis north face as your backdrop. You might even see some sheep from the nearby Hohfad farm!
The Traverse
Next, traverse over to the Hundsbach stream, where glacial waters form clear pools ideal for a refreshing swim. Continue to Alp Bödmen, where you might spot some llamas, before descending towards Herrenrüti.
Return Options
From the Fürenalp valley station, you can take a free summer bus back to Engelberg train station, hike back the way you came via the scenic golf course, or take the path to the right through town (as shown on map).
