Latest snowfall: April 17
Avalanche alert level (from WhiteRisk avalanche bulletin): 3= Considerable. NESW. >2200m. Danger level “considerable” (3=) in all aspects above 2200m. New snow. As a consequence of new snow and a sometimes strong northwesterly wind, avalanche prone wind slabs formed. In the course of the day these will increase in size additionally. The new snow and wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant. In addition individual natural avalanches are possible. Avalanches can in isolated cases reach large size.
Backcountry touring and other off-piste activities call for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger.
Snow pack (from WhiteRisk avalanche bulletin): At the beginning of the week, there was still dry snow on the surface of the snowpack only on steep north-facing slopes in the high Alpine regions. With strong westerly winds and some new snow, in recent days rather small wind slabs have formed locally at high altitudes. With the intensification of the snowfall and strong northwesterly winds in places, more extensive wind slabs that are increasingly prone to triggering will develop on Wednesday.
The old snowpack is thoroughly moist up to over 3000 m on east-, south- and west-facing slopes, and up to around 2500 m on north-facing slopes. Owing to falling temperatures, wet and gliding avalanche activity has decreased appreciably. Gliding avalanches are still possible in very isolated cases.
