Engelberg Snow Report – January 16, 2024

Three skiers turning in foggy powder snow

2024 appears to have put its foot on the gas and is not letting up! We’re here for it. The days are cold and we’ve been getting consistent snowfall for the past couple of weeks. For those skiers who took a chance and planned their ski holidays in January/February, they are truly being rewarded!

Staff Ski Day

We may have a staff full of humans with different nationalities, personalities, styles, etc…but one thing is for certain: we love to ski. We work hard together, and ski hard together. Last week we took advantage of the recent snowfall and bluebird weather with a pretty epic staff shred day.

One of the beautiful things about booking your stay with us at Ski Lodge is that almost every staff member is a skier, and can give you advice on where to find the goods. We think that’s a pretty special perk.

US Ski Team Visitors!

With a low and sketchy snowpack in North America right now, we’ve had quite a few skier friends from the US come visit us this past week! A couple of highlights are Steve Nyman and Tommy Ford, former and current US Ski Team members. They sure know how to ski powder for having spent so much time in injected ice!

We think the photos speak for themselves, but what are you waiting for? Book your stay with us for a ski trip of a lifetime!

Hard Facts

Snow depth Mountain (slope, 3020m): 277 cm

Latest snowfall: Mon, 15.01

Avalanche alert level: (from WhiteRisk avalanche bulletin):

Danger level “considerable” (3-) in northwest to east to south facing aspects above 1800m.

Wind slab

The fresh wind slabs are poorly bonded with the old snowpack. Single winter sport participants can release avalanches easily. These can reach large size in isolated cases. Backcountry touring calls for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and careful route selection.

Snow pack (from WhiteRisk avalanche bulletin): In many areas, new snow and snowdrift from yesterday and today are lying on angular layers or on surface hoar. This makes them prone to triggering. There are hardly any critical weak layers deeper in the snowpack.

Some medium-sized and, rarely, large gliding avalanches are still possible, especially at altitudes between 2000 and 2600 m.
