Engelberg Snow Report – January 30, 2024

Skier making a turn on chalky snow with a dark blue background

After some weeks of frozen toes and noses, the temperatures have given us a bit of a break this week! It’s always nice to have a conditions mix-up throughout the ski season. It keeps us on our toes, and offers us a chance to re-evaluate the snowpack.

This past week we’ve been enjoying carving the crisp pistes in the mornings, finding powder stashes in the shadowed areas, and slashing spring conditions on the sunny side! No matter where you’re skiing, you are just about guaranteed to have a great time with the right gear.

Find Your Gear Here!

Are you coming to ride with us soon, but don’t want to lug around your ski equipment? We have you covered.

  1. First off, Ski Lodge operates a Second Hand Shop, with lightly loved gear ready for a new home. Let us know if you have something specific in mind, and we can see if we have anything here for you!
  2. Quattro Sport is a great option, as they are right on the way to the lift from Ski Lodge and offer a 15% discount if you’re staying locally.
  3. Intersport has two locations in town. They have a nice selection and also do great boot work if you are in need!
  4. Boardlocal is the go-to spot for our friends who like to go sideways. 🙂
  5. Want to ski like Marco Odermatt? Well then you should probably start at Stockli. They offer super high quality piste skis for all ability levels. This location also has a fantastic stone grinding machine if your skis need a little love.
  6. We always love to recommend Arena Sport. Specifically for freeride skis, we think this is a great option. Ask for our friend Dani. 🙂
  7. Want to rock a new outfit, but don’t really feel like buying a brand new kit for your ski holiday? Our friends over at Cirkel Supply Co. are here for you! They offer premium ski clothing for rent. The best part? If you order it they will deliver it directly to us, and all you have to do is wear it and leave it here! The easiest (and most climate friendly) way to ski in style.

Hard Facts

Snow depth Mountain (slope, 3020m): 272 cm

Latest snowfall: 01/19/2024

Avalanche alert level: (from WhiteRisk avalanche bulletin):

Moderate (2-) Dry avalanches

Danger level “moderate” (2-) in west to northeast to southeast facing aspects above 2400m.

No distinct avalanche problem: A generally favourable avalanche situation will prevail. Avalanches can in isolated cases be released in near-surface layers. They can in some cases reach medium size. Very steep slopes are to be traversed by snow sport participants one at a time.

Moderate (2) Wet-snow avalanches

Danger level “moderate” (2) in all aspects below 2500m.

Gliding snow: More medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large gliding avalanches are to be expected. Areas with glide cracks are to be avoided as far as possible.

Snow pack (from WhiteRisk avalanche bulletin): There are weak layers in the snowpack, especially near the surface, that are prone to triggering. These are gradually stabilizing. There are hardly any weak layers in the lower part of the snowpack that are prone to triggering. To date, gliding avalanches have mainly occurred on east-, south- and west-facing slopes below around 2500 m and, less frequently, on north-facing slopes below around 2200 m. Gliding avalanches may still be triggered at any time of the day or night and may be large in regions with a lot of snow. Furthermore, isolated wet avalanches may occur on steep sunny slopes due to warming and solar radiation during the day.

Snow depths are above average at high altitudes, except in the south. They are below average to average at intermediate altitudes and generally in the south. On northern slopes, the snow lines in the north are between 1000 and 1400 m, while in the south and also in some parts of southern Valais they are between 1400 and 1800 m. On south-facing slopes, the snow lines are 200 to 400 m higher.
