Sunshine and smiles all around here in Engelberg this week. With the interesting snowpack and clear skies, we’ve been getting creative and having a great time doing it. We skied everything from perfect spring corn to shaded packed powder, summiting peaks and sneaking into couloirs, all from our back door.
Life in the Swiss Alps is good, as always. We were gifted a beautiful sun-filled week, with plenty of nice snow to be found. In shady, wind-protected areas, you can find WOO!-inducing creamy surface hoar. In south-facing areas, we’ve had a freeze/thaw cycle, producing epic spring corn runs. It’s all out there, you just have to ski it. 🙂
The days ahead are looking goooood. With winds coming in from the west, the snow should start falling on Tuesday night, and continue through Thursday. Cancel your weekend plans and we will see you here.
Adventures in the Backyard
This past week one of our team members joined local guide Dani Perret on a hut-to-hut Big Mountain Camp, starting and ending right in Engelberg. It was a truly incredible adventure. If you’re looking to enhance your alpine touring skills, see more of the mountains surrounding Engelberg, and eat really nice food, we recommend this 10/10. Everything from crevasse rescue, short-roping on spicy ridge lines, climbing with crampons, and route finding was covered. This is such a unique experience, as not only are you learning these skills, but putting them into action in real alpine situations. The team at Engelberg Mountain Guide offers private and group excursions, so no matter your skill level, they have something for you. Give them a call!
BBIT is HERE!
Ever thought to yourself, “Where can I find the best burger in Engelberg?” Well obviously it’s here at Ski Lodge…but every winter we decide to mix it up and let some of our friends design their dream burger, and YOU get to choose which is truly the best in town. Already this year our partners over at the Roastery Engelberg have put their burger to the test. Now our friend and pro skier Henry Tof has concocted his fantasy burger: The Le Tof. Brioche bun, angus beef, morelle cream, rocket lettuce, pickled king oyster mushroom, white onion, deep fried reblochon cheese, and of course fries and dip. Is your mouth watering? Come in and give it a try, and don’t forget to vote for your favorite.
Hard Facts
Snow depth Mountain (slope, 3.020m): 95 cm
Snow condition: powder, partially hard
Latest snowfall: 02/27/2023 – Valley: 02/28/2023
Avalanche alert level: Danger level “low”, level 1
Snow pack (from avalanche bulletin)
With strong westerly winds, small accumulations of snowdrift will form locally. These should be judged with caution in extremely steep terrain. Even a small avalanche can sweep people away and cause them to fall. In the high mountains, these danger spots are more frequent and the danger higher.
In addition, very isolated avalanches can be triggered in the old snow, especially on shady slopes with little traffic. Extreme slopes should be skied individually.
