Engelberg Summer Adventure of the Week – Surenenpass Bike Expedition

Mountain bike rider coming down a gravel road in a beautiful mountain pass

“Cycling through a postcard” is literally what you will be feeling as you set out on this incredible and challenging bike ride to Surenenpass. From the charming village to the rugged mountain trails, this route offers a gorgeous ascent and thrilling descent. If you’re looking for a great day adventure, this will be unforgettable.

Starting Point: From the Village to the Valley

The journey begins on a nice easy path through Engelberg. As you pedal along the Engelberger Aa River, you’ll pass by the amazing world cup ski jump, the monastery, and a few classic Swiss farmhouses. This section is a great warm up for the ride ahead. After about 1.5 km, the trail takes a turn towards the Fürenalp cable car. Here, the valley starts to narrow and tilt upward, and the smooth surface gives way to gravel, adding a bit of grit to your ride.

The Steady Climb: Herrenrüti to Stäfeli

As you continue uphill, you’ll pass landmarks like Herrenrüti and the Alpenrösli restaurant. These spots are perfect for a quick breather or a snapshot of the stunning alpine scenery. (*Mega pro tip: the Alpenrösli is said to have the world’s best rösti..) The trail then leads to the Stäfeli hut, a cute and cozy spot where you can take a break and perhaps indulge in some local cheese.

Towards Blackenalp: Entering the Alpine

After Stäfeli, things kick up a notch. The gravel road veers right, crossing the Stierenbach stream. The trail meanders along the valley’s right side, hugging the flanks of the Spannörter mountains. This part of the ride feels like a true high alpine adventure. Keep an eye out for the Stäuber waterfall! Once you arrive at Blackenalp, it’s a great time to take a break and soak in the magnificent views. The Blackenalp is an excellent spot to recharge your batteries before tackling the final ascent.

The Final Ascent: Reaching Surenenpass

This last stretch is a test of endurance and strength! At times, you might find yourself pushing your bike alongside you. The breathtaking views of the Urner Alps make every effort worthwhile. Take in the stunning panorama before turning back around and enjoying the incredible downhill ride ahead of you! You will backtrack on the same path that took you in, and you will have plenty of opportunities for refreshments along the way.
