New faces, new staff, new beers and a whole lot of new inspiration sources.
The weather is fine, we have sun and we do like it more than the clouds whirling around making everything dark. Clouds that come bearing NO gifts in terms of snow may stay away if you ask us. If however the sun would like to scooch over for some heavy clouds filled with champagne powder, we would be happy to make the space. We love the slopes and deep down we know that it is really great training for the season and we will be better skiers, but we just really want to try out our new (really wide) powder skis.
So what do we do to not tear our hair out? Well, We play memory. (Wait, what?!)
Yes. So the background of this game is pretty simple: this is the most confusing time of the year. Engelberg is a small town and the people that stay over summer are not that many, compared to the never ending new faces that visit during the winter. So with all the new people, staff and energy that is building up we have to get some structure. We start to build our winter memory palace. This time of the year it is a must to remember where the crevasses up on the glacier are, in order to safely navigate around them – and not in them. If you do not know where they are, please do not go out on the glacier. If however you want to go out there. Take a good look when you go up in the Rotair lift and maybe take some pictures for safekeeping 🙂
When it comes to new faces, we have to do this properly. People get nicknames depending on where you saw them, where they just started to work, the color of their beanie or any other story. (Just to make things easier until we have all the facts in hand.) An example for this is “the hamburger guy” – You know the guest who ate three hamburgers after skiing and then had the three course skiers’ dinner. That’s him! A true Legend! … and so on.
It is a very confusing game since all of us notice different things in people, but it’s never the less fun.
The other day Jonas in the bar whispered very subtle to another staff member: “This guy is a regular so he usually drinks the Zwickelbier (unfiltered local beer)”. He got the answer: “Yes I know, I have met him every other Friday during the last two years”.
Sometimes we just have to work on our memory skills and hopefully you will be here and part of our game in no time.
