Podium Place – Snow Report 13th Dec

Linus Archibald in a powderturn captured by Oskar Enander.

We are now 150cm better than the #3 on the list.

At this moment there is three ski resorts topping the charts. Engelberg Titlis, Les Diablerets – Glacier 3000, and Gstaad. Until yesterday we were on a split 1st place, from today we are on a close 2nd place after these guys mentioned above.

NOTE: These are the official numbers from Bergfex, but to be honest it snowed here yesterday and It doesn’t show on the report… Maybe we have to do our own measuring in the future. We are not experts but hey, if it’s snowing it should be on the report.

So after a really cloudy and snow filled weekend we had some föhn winds on Monday, warm and strong, an absolute disaster for powder snow, the kryptonite to our white gold. The whole day we all held our breath and hoped it to disappear, quickly. It did luckily go away faster than anticipated, colder temperatures arrived already the same day and so did the snow. It was snowing heavily Tuesday afternoon and over night to Wednesday and we forgot the föhn.

We are looking forward to a refill of 70cm over the upcoming 7 days. Then the sun will probably come out again on Wednesday but we are not in a hurry to rush her.

Danger description

Snowdrift:

Wind
  • During the night, winds were blowing at strong velocity, in isolated cases at storm strength, from southerly to southwesterly directions.
  • During the daytime, winds were blowing mostly at light to moderate strength, from westerly to southwesterly directions.

The large snow drift accumulations of the last few days can be released, especially at their margins,. Single winter sport participants can release avalanches in some places, including medium-sized ones. Back country touring and other off-piste activities call for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and careful route selection.
As the day progresses mostly small snow drift accumulations will form. These are to be evaluated with care and prudence.
