We’re Open for Skiing on Mt Titlis Glacier in Engelberg.

2024.10.31

After a long summer hiatus, the glacier opened again on the 26th of October, inviting us back to experience that cosy, familiar thrill of the wind in our faces gliding down a mountain instead of pushing up it (a very welcomed change to our daily routines). With pristine morning conditions and early-season adventure feelings sitting on the gondola, it’s the perfect way to ease into winter and get your feet back in action!

The snowy mountains are calling, and last week, the glacier slopes opened their doors to skiers again, wrapping us in that unforgivable thrill of wondering if we can still ski. There’s something truly comforting about stepping onto the ski boots again, and it has nothing to do with the physical feeling—that’s the worst—but the crisp air mingling with the buckling of boots and fumbling for gear mindset is just so darn cute, while also being a hundred per cent a full-on mental breakdown frenzy feeling.

“Where the heck are my gloves? Did I throw them out? I thought about it last spring… they smelled like a ski boot graveyard.. But did I do it? And if I did, why didn’t I buy new ones? Months to replace them, and here I am. Ugh, whatever—cross-country gloves it is!”

Current Conditions on Engelberg Glacier

The conditions have started off well; in the mornings, the slopes are pristine, with firm, carve-ready corduroy that skiers dream of, while the afternoons take on a softer, slushier character, reminding us of the unique, ever-changing conditions of glacier skiing. With two lifts and two slopes open, the experience feels wonderfully intimate—a chance to reconnect with the mountain at a gentle pace before the winter crowds arrive.

As is typical for early-season glacier skiing, we get to carve our way down while keeping an eye out for crevasses, adding a little extra dash of adventure to each run. These natural features, appearing between the slopes, remind us to tread carefully and stay aware, especially since they’ll likely remain until January, when they’re typically filled in. It’s a reminder of the raw beauty of the glacier and the dynamic environment that makes glacier skiing unique. The two open slopes offer ample space to spread out, giving skiers the chance to savor the mountain’s peacefulness and bask in the pure delight of that first winter chill.

What now? How and when is Engelberg Open for skiing?

The Glacier is open until November 4, after which there will be a maintenance break for the Titlis Rotair and glacier slopes until November 15. Afterwards, skiing continues for the season through April 21, 2025. For those planning a return to the slopes, mark your calendars with the extended schedule: Stand-Trübsee opens mid-November, Jochpass on November 30, and other surrounding areas like Engstlenalp, Jochstock, Gerschnialp, and Untertrübsee follow into December. The valley descent is expected to open on November 30 as well and we all need to do some snow dancing for this, rounding out a full season of winter on Mt. Titlis. This is only the beginning, but already, the mountain feels like home again.
